Shereen Vallabouy, a senior at Winona State and the reigning NCAA Division 2 Indoor and Outdoor 400-meter champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her pursuit of becoming only the second female athlete in program history to secure back-to-back indoor crowns at the Division 2 championship meet March 10-11 in Virginia Beach, joining two-time weight throw winner Kaitlyn Long in 2015-16. Vallabouy, who represented Malaysia last year at the World Athletics Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., as well as the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, elevated to the No. 6 all-time Division 2 indoor competitor in the 400 with her 52.87 performance Feb. 3 at the Lewis Invitational in Chicago. She also ranks No. 20 in Division 2 outdoor history at 52.68 with her winning effort in May at the NCAA final at Grand Valley State. Vallabouy also examines the potential of the Warriors in the 4x400-meter relay at the Division 2 indoor championship meet, joining forces with Regan Feit, Alyssa Larson and Brooklyn Schyvinck in pursuit of the title following a 3:44.02 effort Feb. 11 at Minnesota State. Vallabouy analyzes the benefits of competing on a 200-meter banked track at the Division 2 indoor final in comparison to racing last year on a 300-meter flat surface at Pittsburg State in Kansas. She reflects on her experiences from racing at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, and how proud she was to represent her country, in addition to how valuable the competition was in preparation for her final year of collegiate eligibility. Vallabouy expresses gratitude for the recognition and support she has received back home throughout her career at Winona State, and the challenges of acclimating to the winter weather in Minnesota. She also speaks about how impressive it is to have four Division 2 student-athletes the remarkable caliber of Denisha Cartwright and Makayla Jackson at Minnesota State, along with herself and Winona State teammate Lindsay Cunningham, not only competing in the same state, but the same Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Vallabouy looks ahead to the spring outdoor season and racing May 6-12 at the Southeast Asian Games, as well as her opportunities to compete in August at the World Championships in Hungary, in addition to the Asian Games in September in China.
